Yesterday I attended a press conference held at CitySquares customer, Model Ace Hardware in Allston. Mayor Menino was there to announce the city’s new Boston Buying Power initiative. If you haven’t heard about Boston Buying Power yet, than listen up! This truly is exciting news for local businesses.
Boston Buying Power is an energy buying group designed to allow small businesses to purchase energy at a long-term fixed price through access to the deregulated energy market. Boston Buying Power puts small businesses on a level playing field with the largest of commercial accounts and enables them to take advantage of benefits that until now have been unavailable to the small business community.
“Boston is committed to encouraging and supporting strong business communities. One of the ways we can do this is by advocating for small businesses and providing resources during difficult economic times,” Mayor Menino explained.
“Boston Buying Power is designed to give our hard working small business sector the peace of mind that comes from long-term price certainty and budget stability.”
Enrollment is easy and not only will Boston Buying Power begin saving you money today but they can lock-in that lower price for up to five years providing long term price certainty and budget stability for small businesses. More information can be found at www.bostonbuyingpower.com.

A few months back at the Somerville Local First launch party I met a fella named Steve D’Agostino. We talked briefly about what CitySquares was doing, and he spoke passionately about what he’s doing in Worcester for Worcester Local First. We hit it off pretty quickly, and realized how well aligned our missions are. I later found out that Steve also hosts his own talk radio program. Well, today I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Steve on WICN 90.5 FM’s Business Beat program. It was a 30 minute interview almost entirely about local businesses, their impact on local economics, and of course CitySquares too.
I’ve uploaded the audio file here but you can also find it up on WICN’s website.

Bob, Justin and Michael (the three amigos making up our Product Team) have worked their tails off to bring you a very cool new feature that we’re very proud of. This feature is also brought to you in part by Maponics, a new CitySquares content partner.
In a nutshell, this new Neighborhood Map feature allows you to navigate through the Boston area using only a map. You can hop around the site from neighborhood to neighborhood using just a map! And now we show those neighborhood boundaries! You can see for yourself on CitySquares.com. Just click the “Navigate by Map” button.

This new Neighborhood Map feature is just our first release too. We’ve got some very clever ideas in the works, including more neighborhood boundaries and more user friendly features. It won’t be long now that we’ll be able to guess where you are too. So if you’re at, say, Angora Cafe in Kenmore Square, we’d like to be able to automatically know that and take you right to Kenmore Square on CitySquares. Ya know? OK, I tend to get a little excited about this stuff. More on that later though.
So we just wanted to announce this cool new feature to you all. Oh, and hey, we’re open to your suggestions and feedback too. Just shoot an email to Bob!
